Thai massage that heals body and soul

The Founding Father of the world-famous Thai massage as we know it today is Jeeva Kumar Bhikku or Jiva Komarpad, also known among locals as 'Father Doctor' or 'Doctor Shivaka'. He is believed to have been a close friend and personal physician of Gautama Buddha. Even today, all Thai massage therapists start each session with a mantra to Father Doctor.

Thai massage, otherwise known as yoga-massage, is a complex body-healing system of absolutely effortless passive exercises that remind you of yoga poses, with bodystretching, acupressure, deep muscle massage, joint-opening exercises and reflexology, all focused on activating energy flow through the body.

The origins of Thai massage date back more than 2500 years, and have gained popularity with time. Over the centuries, Thai massage techniques have been influenced by healing Ayurveda practices from ancient India and traditional Chinese medicine.

Recovering your energy balance is the basic principle of oriental healing practices, and Thai massage is no exception. Thai therapists believe in energy circulation through body channels named 'sen'. This idea may remind you of the Chinese 'qi' natural energy principle, which postulates that 'qi' flows through special body meridians. Indian Ayurveda practices, in their turn, define healthy living principles on the basis of 'prana' and 'nadi', where 'prana' stands for life energy flow, and 'nadi' for energy channels. Both Indian and Chinese healing practices stem from the belief that all human ailings result from energy flow disorders. Healing, in its turn, is the natural restoration of your energy balance. Massage therapists apply pressure on certain parts of your body and work your muscles intensely to release energy flow in ten basic energy channels and eliminate all unwanted barriers in them. So, experience a Thai massage workout to restore your energy balance and leave you feeling healthy, relaxed and wise.

How do I choose a massage parlour?

Just as other spa-therapies, massage is pleasantly relaxing for both men and women. You do not have to spend a whole day away from the beach to search for a decent massage parlour – Thai massage therapists advertise their services loud and clear. You may try visiting different massage parlours to find the one that best suits your individual needs. Of course, not every single massage therapist in Thailand is a professional, and a flashy signboard and a high price are no guarantee of better service. A one-hour massage ritual will cost you about 300 Baht. Seek recommendations from friends and other travellers. If your body longs for more, make sure you return again and again for increasingly better results.

A massage session will start from with refreshing procedure in which your therapist wipes your feet with a wet towel and takes you to a neat little massage room, with soft background music and air perfumed with an exotic fruit or floral scent. Put on the clean cotton robe offered you, and enjoy an hour of pleasure. Your massage therapist will focus on every body zone, until your bones respond by cracking gently (don’t worry, it won’t hurt). In sixty minutes you will be as good as new – or even better – energised and revitalised.
