Butterfly Paradise
Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World is a one-of-the-kind research facility in Phuket and the first insect biology centre in the country, founded in February 1990. Apart from attracting thousands of tourists to admire the beauty of the insect world each year, Butterfly Garden carries out important scientific research and on butterflies' and other insects' behaviour in their natural habitat. By exhibiting insects in their natural environment, the research centre promotes a better understanding of the tropical insect world. Butterfly Garden staff work very hard to preserve its ecosystem, in the hope that every visitor will understand the importance of insects and appreciate their fragile beauty. Insects have been around for the last 400 million years, and they continue to enchant us by the way they look and behave.
All butterflies you will see in Butterfly Garden were born here. Garden staff aim at preserving, cultivating and breeding rare insect species that are on the brink of extinction. The majority of butterflies born here are later released into the wild for natural reproduction.
Phuket Butterfly Garden is an amazing place, and will bring great joy and wonder to your kids. They will watch tropical butterflies consuming nectar and going through each stage of their life cycle: evolving from an egg, through a larva and a pupa into an adult insect. In case you are interested in the wonders of silk production, you also have a chance to visit the local Silk Museum. Then get a snack at the garden café and – when your hunger is satisfied – do not forget to feed your favourite butterflies. You can buy butterfly food at the main entrance to the garden, as well as all sorts of souvenirs and Thai-made handicraft at the little retail store nearby.
While you’re here, you must visit the recently founded insectary to admire the tropical diversity of the insect kingdom – the largest and most widespread kingdom in the animal world. The insectary is paradise for all species of beetles – true insect kings – and social insects, such as bees, wasps and ants. Enjoy listening to cicadas and crickets, watching grasshoppers and dragonflies, stoneflies and moths, scorpions and tarantulas, and a whole multitude of wonderful others. You will also see hundreds of carp floating peacefully in the park pond, and if lucky, you will spot a giant softshell turtle, which floats its dignified way through all the little fish.
Your visit to Butterfly Garden on Phuket will be a fantastic experience, especially for your kids.
